FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929 – BREAKAWAY with BIG CITY BLUES ~ [0:00] FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929 – THAT’S YOU BABY with WALKING WITH SUSIE ~ [3:20] Jack Hylton and his Orchestra; vocalist – Sam Browne HMV B5658 (17 June 1929) Jack Hylton on top form, with two classic sides! Movietone was a sound-on-film system acquired from the inventor by the Fox Film Corporation in 1926. It was a rival to Warner Brother’s Vitaphone sound-on-disc system: incidentally, the origins of 33⅓ rpm, though the 16-inch discs were shellac with groove dimensions of the 78 rpm era. To those of a certain generation ‘Movietone’ will be remembered as a cinema newsreel the 1950s. In his film guide, ITV’s film buyer Leslie Halliwell commented on the FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929: Every studio had its early talkie musical using up its contract stars; this was perhaps the least interesting. (There was a sequel; the ‘New Movietone Follies of 1930’.) Whatever Halliwell thought, FOX MOVIETONE FOLLIES OF 1929 had some cracking tunes. Mordant Hall, reviewing the film in the New York Times of 27 May 1929 singled out the four tunes on this record with: The song that appeared to be most popular on Saturday was one called "That's You, Baby," which is rendered by a variety of couples. "Big City Blues," another melody, was quite catchy, as were also "Walking With Susie" and "The Breakaway." Only three weeks after the NYT review, Hylton and his band were in the Small Queen’s Hall recording two gripping arrangements, each weaving two tunes together. Sam Browne is the vocalist on BREAKAWAY; and he is joined by two others for THAT’S YOU BABY. Sam was 31 at the time of this session; and, according to the Wiki entry, had been with Hylton for ten months. However, his brief obituary in The Stage in 1972 says: his eventful career commenced in 1925 when he was drummer and vocalist with Jack Hylton’s Band.
