Jaguar E-Type - The Monocoque Metalworks "Hidden Subframe" - Part 1

Today's video looks at how we build a "hidden subframe" inside the enclosed sections of the E-Type sills, crossmember, and rear lower bulkhead using heavy wall tubing and uprated sill gussets. This structure is completely hidden and does not interfere with any attachment points, etc. What it DOES do is add considerable stiffness and safety, and much needed support for the radius arm cups and jacking points. We build this feature into ALL of the E-Type monocoque body shells that we restore here, and your should make this upgrade to your E-Type as well! In Part 1, we prepare the floors by attaching the radius arm cups with solid rivets (available here...), and then attach lower engine frame brackets with the proper dimensions (also available here...) to the inner sill. Next, we ad the heavy-wall tubing to the inner sill and weld it into place. Adding in our hidden subframe adds almost no cost to the restoration of the body shell. The tubing itself is readily available and you'll need to spend less than $100 USD on that. Our heavy-duty gussets that interface with the tubing cost no more than the factory-style, thin and flimsy gussets, and it's really not that much more work. But it WILL stiffen the chassis, it WILL prevent your radius cups from tearing out of the floor over time, it WILL strengthen the jacking points and prevent caving in of the sills when you jack the car - AND - it might save your life one day! - and THAT is the reason I'm willing to share this information in detail.
