3D Printed Medical Models

3D medical models provide patient specific anatomies, helping doctors develop custom treatments and surgical approaches. These models accurately depict the complex geometries of human structures, and have even be used in simulations prior to life saving procedures. Here we reveal two examples, both printed using PolyJet technology. PolyJet works by jetting UV curable photo-polymers onto a build tray, forming realistic parts with a range of material properties. The first model portrays a life threatening brain aneurysm of a patient from the Jacobs Institute. Using the model, doctors were able to simulate blood circulation and develop a tool that would effectively embolize the aneurysm in a surgery. The second model shows select vasculature in the brain and a printed representation of a tumor. A surgeon was able to reference this model before and during surgery, which improved clarity for a complicated life saving process.
