Honestly, I think the problem is a lot of people used the CMG50 and figured that the rifle caliber machine guns and SAWs weren't strong enough to match with large rifles. They are decent at suppression, but not terribly powerful and you get them really early generally speaking. A squad with one competes against the basic carbine very well for its cost. However, the 50 cal, automatic grenade launcher and the autocannon are monstrous weapons. The SAWs are good enough to be useful when you have a squad at around 90 points even into the later parts of the game as a suppression tool, but taking a MC6 is just way better value, and you should be able to pick up a few even if you have to use the rare shop for it.
