0:00 In today's video, Dr. Aditya Kulkarni ( GI Surgeon ) will tell us about possible reasons for Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), its symptoms, and treatments. 0:46 GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a chronic condition in which stomach acid or stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. It is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Here are some of the causes and treatments for GERD: 1:11 Causes of GERD: Weak lower esophageal sphincter (LES): The LES is a muscle at the bottom of the esophagus that acts as a valve to prevent stomach contents from flowing back up into the esophagus. When the LES is weak or relaxes inappropriately, it can allow stomach acid to reflux into the esophagus. 2:17 Information About Hiatus Hernia: Hiatus hernias are common and often do not cause any symptoms. However, they can cause gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing heartburn and other symptoms. Hiatus hernias can also cause chest pain, difficulty swallowing, and shortness of breath. Certain foods and drinks: Some foods and drinks, such as chocolate, peppermint, caffeine, and alcohol, can relax the LES and increase the risk of GERD. Obesity: Being overweight or obese can increase the pressure on the stomach, which can lead to GERD. 3:31 Symptoms of GERD: Heartburn: a burning sensation in the chest or throat, often after eating or at night. Regurgitation: a sour or bitter taste in the mouth caused by stomach acid coming back up into the throat. Difficulty swallowing: a feeling that food is stuck in the throat or chest. Chest pain: a sharp pain in the chest that can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack. Nausea: a feeling of queasiness or an upset stomach. Belching: frequent burping or hiccupping. Sore throat: a hoarse or scratchy throat caused by stomach acid irritating the throat. Chronic cough: a persistent cough that is caused by irritation of the esophagus and throat. 4:15 How To Prevent Acid Reflux: Lifestyle changes: Certain lifestyle changes can help reduce the frequency and severity of GERD symptoms. These include losing weight if you are overweight or obese, avoiding trigger foods and drinks, eating smaller meals, and not lying down for at least three hours after eating 7:05 TREATMENTS OF GERD: Medications: Over-the-counter and prescription medications can help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach and relieve GERD symptoms. These include antacids, H2 blockers, and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Surgery: In severe cases of GERD that do not respond to lifestyle changes or medications, surgery may be necessary. The most common surgery for GERD is called fundoplication, which involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach around the LES to reinforce the valve and prevent acid reflux. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider if you suspect you have GERD, as they can help determine the underlying cause and recommend the appropriate treatment.
