Sometimes I get really cold pots that are filled with deep gouges and scratches and areas that just won’t clean up very well or at all, even with sanding and using the Dremel and all kinds of grinding. And a lot of times, you really don’t want to grind or get too deep into those areas because all you’re doing with trying to clean them out is to make the gouge or scratch deeper or wider, weaking the copper further! So…I have devised a way of forcing the tin to take. I’m not sure if it’s correct, as there’s literally no advice on this anywhere, in any of the books or anything, so it’s from almost 8 years of trial and error and learning. BUT I heat the pot up over the fire and wipe in pure muriatic acid before doing the flux, tin and wipe. Sometimes I have to do that 2 – 3 times if the pot is being naughty! But it works! Be sure you wear proper breathing equipment and have ventilation to do this!
