When someone undergoes Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE), their blood is passed through an apheresis machine, and their filtered plasma is removed and discarded. They then get a reinfusion of red blood cells and replacement fluid such as plasma or albumin. While often expensive, this treatment is trending in longevity spaces and could potentially treat neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease in the future. But how does it work, and what is the science behind it? TPE pioneer and Global Apheresis founder Dr. Dobri Kiprov joined Being Patient Live Talks to discuss this cutting-edge treatment and its applications for longevity and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. Kiprov is an immunologist and internationally recognized leader in apheresis, with over 100 publications on the subject. He pioneered the use of TPE to mitigate the effects of aging and has conducted several controlled and uncontrolled studies. Kiprov founded Global Apheresis and co-founded Lyfspan, a company devoted to aging research. He is also a senior visiting scientist at the Buck Institute for the Research of Aging. He has served two terms on the American Society for Apheresis Board of Directors and is currently a member of the International Society of Apheresis Board of Directors. He is also a Journal of Transfusion and Apheresis Science editorial board member. He was the founder and President of the Bay Area Mobile Apheresis Program and the Senior Vice President and Medical Director for Apheresis for Fresenius Medical Care, CA.
