Gilberto Guarino plays J. S. Bach - "Das Orgelbüchlein".According to Russell Stinson (in "The Orgelbüchlein", p. 97, Oxford University Presse, New York - Oxford). "Durch Adams Fall ist ganz verderbt" BWV 637 is an early chorale. The myth is that of Adam's fall. Outstanding chromaticism can be aesthetically appreciated throughout, dealing with six motives. The pedals depict the outcasting sentence, stemming from the Most High. Such an order is developed through a recurrent intersperse in the following pattern of diminished sevenths and cadences:7th-7th-cadence/7th-7th-cadence/ ritornello/; 7th-7th-cadence/7th-7th-cadence/7th-7h-cadence, now with two crotchets (preparing of the final words of the decree) /7th-7th-7th (perfect cadence). From measure 11 on (III, 2), the musical idea strengthens progressively, until it reaches its maximum degree of inner tension, just on the verge of conclusion. A certain precipitation has then been chosen to convey the notion of "and that is final"... It is said Hermann Keller maintained that the tenor depicts the writhing of the serpent. Such an idea seems not properly conveyed when the music is played fast (the serpent is Lucifer; not a cobra...). Be that as it may, such an assertion cannot be found in Keller's "The Organ Works of Bach - A Contribution to their History, Form, Interpretations and Performance" (C. F. Peters Corporation, New York - London - Frankfurt). He suggests quaver = 69.
