I pretty much don't weed, as I find weeds are either beneficial to my garden or they are an indicator that I am doing something wrong, in the #foodforest or #veggiepatch There are lots of things that can be done to suppress the weeds, instead of pulling them out by the roots. Cardboard and mulch is a good option, as is using a tarp to cover larger areas. There are also ways to plant, which will help out. For example you could space seedlings closer together in the veggie patch which would cut down the available space weeds could grow in. If weeds are coming up in the garden, I usually look for possible causes. One might be that my compost bins are getting hot enough and that weed seeds are therefore surviving. Another way to combat weeds is to plant cover crops. Soil that is left uncovered is a good way to attract weeds. Either I'll plant something or I will mulch. Both of these actions mean that the soil will be fed. If the soil isn't being fed, then it is feeding on itself. So by planting cover crops or mulching I will be feeding the soil, but also suppressing weeds. Mexican sunflower or tithonia is also an interesting plant that can be used to control weeds in large areas. This happens in two ways, the first is that it releases a chemical from its roots which inhibit growth of other plants, namely grass nearby and secondly it grows very very quickly, outcompeting everything and covering it with shade. If I do see what could be called a " weed", rather than pull it up, I prefer to leave the roots in the ground and cut the plant, this will give numerous benefits to the soil, far better than just weeding it out.
