Ok, I'm splitting hairs here a bit, but Gibson's own catalog and price list indicated that the yellow finished Junior looking guitar was in fact a totally different model that it called the "Les Paul TV" or "TV Model". Structually, it's identical to the Les Paul Junior except for the Limed Mahogany finish and the silkscreen on the peghead. The shipment totals for the time period indicate that there are 10 times as many Juniors as there are TVs made during the same time period. In the vintage guitar collecting world, that's significant! John: / truevintageguitar Riggs: / the_riggstaylor (@RiggsTaylor ) One of my favorite topics of discussion in the vintage guitar world is why did Gibson and Les Paul call it the "TV Model"? You've likely heard the most common story: the yellowish finish was intended to appear white on 1950s televisions with low dynamic range. That's a good assumption, but it's not backed up anywhere by Gibson's literature or even Les Paul's own telling of the story. My favorite source for this information is in the book by Robb Lawrence titled The Les Paul Legacy 1915-1963. Les Paul himself indicates that it was called the TV because he and Mary Ford had a TV show and it was the one they debuted on TV. Or it also could be a marketing ploy to get kids to buy a guitar which would be appropriate to play on TV! You get to decide for yourself in this case. Leave me your opinion in the comments below.
