How to Take the Free Ferry from Staten Island to Manhattan? Manhattan, Staten Island , Ferry, New York, New York City, Manhattan, Sam City Walk, Sam City Life, This video records what I saw and heard when I took the free ferry from Staten Island, New York, to Manhattan Island, New York, USA on the morning of Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Staten Island (/ˈstætən/ STAT-ən), also known as Staten Island in the Chinese American community,[2][3][4] or Staten Island[5][6], is one of the five boroughs of New York City and completely overlaps with Richmond County, New York. Compared to the other four boroughs of New York City, Staten Island is the most remote, least populated, and least developed borough of New York City. The entire Staten Island is located on an island with the same name as the borough. The island is separated from Brooklyn on Long Island by the Narrows (a narrow waterway separating the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean), and to the north by the Van Cork Channel from Bayonne, New Jersey. Staten Island borders New Jersey to the west, and its administrative boundaries actually overlap with Richmond County, the southernmost county in New York State. In fact, Staten Island has always existed independently as Richmond County before the boroughs of New York City merged into their current state in 1898. Transportation A Molinari class Staten Island Ferry sailing Among the five boroughs of New York City, Staten Island is not easily accessible from downtown New York City, and is only connected to Manhattan by the Staten Island Ferry. However, since the ferry operation is funded by the public, it is free, making the ferry the best means of free viewing of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. In order to solve the transportation problem between other boroughs of New York City, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, which spans the strait and connects Staten Island and Brooklyn, was opened in 1964. This 4,260-foot (about 1,298-meter) suspension bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world at the time, greatly improving Staten Island's external transportation and eliminating barriers for residents to enter and exit. Manhattan is the most densely populated of the five boroughs of New York City, United States. It is the same size as New York County. The borough is mainly composed of Manhattan Island, which is bounded by the East River, the Hudson River, and the Harlem River. It also includes some nearby small islands and Marble Mountain, the only enclave on the North American mainland. Manhattan is described as the economic and cultural center of the entire United States. It is also the location of the United Nations headquarters building. Wall Street in Lower Manhattan is one of the most important financial centers in the world, with a GDP of up to $1.2 trillion[6] and is home to two stock exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Its real estate market is also one of the most expensive in the world. In addition, many multinational companies have set up their headquarters here.
