Remembering her accident that left her paralyzed for life, Sana Khurshid shares how she transformed her disability into a powerful ability. She believes that she is not defined by her disability in fact she is grateful for it because it has made her a better person. By narrating her story she teaches us how instead of thinking of what one has lost, they should count all that they have been blessed with. With this positive thinking she shifted her focus from herself and started helping others, especially other persons with disabilities like her and thus she forgot her own troubles. (Videography is done by HAC Films). Sana Khurshid is a lawyer and an activist for persons with disabilities (PWDs). During her career, she has served as a consultant, and researcher, and has lectured on disability and related civil rights topics. Amongst her notable achievements, she has served as an integral member of the Lahore Development Authority’s Advisory Committee for PWDS. This Committee has successfully implemented legislative reforms for improving accessibility for various PWDS, including persons with mobility, sight, and hearing disabilities. Ms. Khurshid has similarly litigated for PWDS’ meaningful accessibility before the Lahore High Court, which has led to tangible reforms within society. She has worked with the relevant department of the Government of Punjab, namely the Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Department, to thoroughly draft a law that aims to improve all rights and entitlements of PWDs. Her work earned her the Pride of Pakistan Award in 2021. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
