This is a powerful marching song to rally the troops. Of course it started life as a Welsh song in their fight against the Saxon invader, i.e. the English, but in later years became a favourite of British Troops of all nations of the British Isles. One of the most moving renditions of it can be heard in the film Zulu when the beleaguered troop of Welsh Engineers are about to face the final battle with the far superior numbers of the Zulu warriors at Rourke's Drift. There are a number of variations in the words, this being a version of the song that appeared in The Songs of Wales, (ed. Brinley Richards, 1873). In this version the words are by John Oxenford. Men Of Harlech Traditional Capo at 5th fret, so I am really playing and singing in the key of C G Em G C Am D7 Men of Harlech, march to glory, Victory is hov'ring o'er ye, G Em G D G Bright eyed freedom stands before ye. Hear ye not her call? G Em G C Am D7 At your sloth she seems to wonder, rend the sluggish bonds asunder, G Em G D G Let the war cry's deaf'ning thunder, ev'ry foe appal. D G Echoes loudly waking, hill and valley shaking; 'Till the sound spreads wide around, the Saxon's courage breaking. C G C G C D7 Your foes on ev'ry side assailing, forward press with heart unfailing, G Em G C G D G Till invaders learn with quailing, Cambria ne'er can yield. G Em G C Am D7 Thou who noble Cambria wrongest, know that freedom's cause is strongest G Em G D G Freedom's courage lasts the longest, ending but with death! G Em G C Am D7 Freedom countless hosts can scatter, freedom stoutest mail can shatter, G Em G D G Freedom thickest walls can batter, fate is in her breath. D G See they now are flying! Dead are heaped with dying! Over might, has triumphed right, our land to foes denying; C G C G C D7 Upon their soil we never sought them, love of conquest hither brought them, G Em G C G D G But this lesson we have taught them, Cambria ne'er can yield.
