​ Don Bryant (Donald Maurice Bryant, April 4, 1942 – December 26, 2025) was an American singer and songwriter, one of the most important voices and pens of Memphis soul. He is best remembered for co-writing the classic “I Can’t Stand the Rain,” performed by his wife Ann Peebles. He began singing in church at age 5. He soon joined the family vocal group and then formed a gospel quartet for a school radio program. The group, called The Four Kings, became the backing band for legendary producer Willie Mitchell, with Bryant as lead vocalist. He co-wrote “I Can’t Stand the Rain” (1973), one of the most influential soul songs of all time, sampled and covered by generations of artists. He received his first Grammy nomination at age 78. Don Bryant passed away on December 26, 2025, at the age of 83, after health problems.
