Dr. James Tabor is Professor Emeritus of Ancient Judaism and Early Christianity at UNC Charlotte and one of the leading scholars on the Dead Sea Scrolls, Jewish Christianity, and the historical Jesus. He is the author of The Jesus Dynasty, Paul and Jesus, and Restoring Abrahamic Faith, and has spent decades reconstructing the earliest layers of the Jesus movement before Paul's theology reshaped it. In this livestream, Derek Lambert sits down with Dr. Tabor to examine one of the most suppressed and misunderstood communities in early Christian history: the Ebionites. Called heretics by the proto-orthodox church, the Ebionites kept Torah, rejected Paul as an apostate, venerated James the brother of Jesus as the rightful leader of the movement, and held a thoroughly human Christology long before Nicaea made divinity the doctrinal baseline. The question scholars keep circling back to is whether the Ebionites weren't a deviation from Christianity at all but a survival of its oldest form. We dig into what the ancient sources actually say, including Irenaeus, Epiphanius, Eusebius, and the Pseudo-Clementine literature, what we can responsibly reconstruct about Ebionite theology and practice, how their Gospel tradition differed from canonical Matthew, and why their conflict with Pauline Christianity may reveal a fault line that was present from the very beginning of the movement.
