Our last podcast featured Prof. Arthur Cummings who had some very keen insight about phakic IOLs. One of the key points that his patients like is that it is reversible -- if, for whatever reason, the patient no longer wants the phakic IOL, then it can be explanted and the patient is back to where he or she started. The optical results of this refractive procedure are excellent, and in higher corrections of myopia, often superior to kerato-refractive surgery like LASIK. While the cost of this procedure can be higher per eye than LASIK, it does offer certain advantages. I anticipate performing more phakic IOLs in the future, particularly with this newer Staar Evo Visian ICL design (I have no financial interests in this product or company).
