Animals Mirrors: Jungle animals recognise themselves in mirrors | PicBusters

This is a project by the French photographer Xavier Hubert Brierre who wanted to know what happens when animals in the wild see their own reflection.The guy in our PicBuster presents himself as a proud breast; thanks to the mirror he knows how good he looks. Can animals recognize themselves in the mirror though? That would mean that they have similar complex thinking processes as we humans do and scientists wanted to learn more. "As it turned out, only 8 species of our planet are able to recognize themselves - these are the great apes that include humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, and orangutans, as well as dolphins, the magpie, and even the elephant." In the north of Thailand, the Elephant International Organization is researching the phenomenon for elephants; this one apparently tries to get in touch with his own reflection, but what happens gradually is incredible. The animal has obviously understood that he is currently seeing himself and as such begins to examine his own body. Elephants seem to particularly like looking at their mouths. The marking test is the final proof that the elephant is aware of its reflection, during which he uses the mirror to locate a mark on himself and finally removes it, which is fascinating!
