All residential, commercial, and institutional play spaces should feature a unitary safety surfacing system that not only meets ADA compliance standards but also minimizes maintenance costs over time. These play areas are some of the most frequently used environments by children and families, and when they are neglected in terms of thoughtful design, it becomes evident through increased maintenance, poor accessibility, and dissatisfied users—both young and old. In past installations, inconsistent elevation changes due to play elements being added over time, outdated woodchips that gets displaced during usage, and non-uniform surfaces such as PIP led to unsafe and non-compliant environments. For example, loose woodchip surfacing, often used to save on costs, quickly deteriorates and fails to provide the necessary ADA accessibility that is needed. It also contributes to uneven surfaces, creating tripping hazards and making mobility difficult for children and caregivers with disabilities. In contrast, the new play space design incorporates a fully integrated rubber tile system by Unity that is level throughout this 9,000 sq. ft. playground, it is also safe, and ADA compliant. One major improvement is the installation of a new wood bordering system that sits flush with the outside grass area and playgrounds within. Unlike the raised edging systems of the past, this flush design eliminates trip hazards and contributes to a more inclusive layout. Below the tiles, a compacted stone subbase was installed, ensuring a solid, even foundation throughout the play area. This base allows in conjunction with Unity’ Fabric/Mesh barrier promotes better drainage, safety, and stability for years to come. Each play component, previously scattered across uneven terrain, is now flat and accessible at a uniform height thanks to said compacted stone base and Unity Rubber Tiles. The result is a seamless, level surface across the entire 9,000 sq. ft. play area, ensuring every play element is fully ADA accessible. Beyond functionality, the colorful design of the rubber tile surfacing adds a visually appealing, cohesive aesthetic to the space. The upgraded layout considers the size, shape, and flow of the total play environment—not just individual elements—creating a unified experience for children of all ages and abilities. Through thoughtful coordination between owners, architects, engineers, and board members, this play space transformation demonstrates how investing in ADA-compliant, low-maintenance, and visually inviting tile surfaces can dramatically improve the overall functionality, safety, and perception of a facility. Unity Rubber Tiles installed over a properly compacted stone base are more than just a surfacing choice—they are a foundation for equitable, durable, and enjoyable play.
