Il se nourrit de vers de terre, d’animaux aquatiques, petits crabes, grenouilles, petits lézards, mille-pattes, criquets, coléoptères C’est un animal craintif qui en cas d’inquiétude ou de danger pousse des cris ressemblant à un nouveau-né humain qui pleurniche. Gabon il est communément appelé « Yanga-Yanga ». Certains l’ont aussi surnommés “collabos” abréviation de collaborateurs ; français qui pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, collaboraient avec l’ennemi (allemands).
