On January 3rd, 1943, over the skies of Nazi-occupied France, a young American ball turret gunner fell 22,000 feet without a parachute. This is the true story of Alan Eugene Magee, a 23-year-old Staff Sergeant aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress during the bombing raid on Saint-Nazaire — known to Allied crews as “Flak City.” When German 88mm anti-aircraft fire tore his aircraft apart, Magee was thrown from the burning bomber at four miles above the Earth. What happened next should have been impossible. Magee crashed through the glass roof of the Saint-Nazaire railway station, surviving a fall that physics says no human body should endure. Severely wounded, captured by German forces, and operated on by an enemy doctor who chose humanity over hatred, Magee would go on to survive years in the POW camp Stalag 17B — and later return to flying as a civilian pilot. This video covers: The deadly bombing raid on Saint-Nazaire The destruction of the B-17 “Snap Crackle Pop” The physics of terminal velocity survival The German doctor who saved his arm Magee’s life after the fall The later recognition by the Smithsonian Institution 🔔 Subscribe for more untold WW2 stories: / @battlefieldlibrary 👍 Like this video if you learned something new 💬 Comment below: What other WW2 tactics should we cover? #ww2 #history #battlefieldlibrary
