Widespread pediatric inoculation against some of the most common meningeal pathogens has rendered meningitis a rare occurrence in the United States, but it still causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. About 4100 cases of bacterial meningitis and 500 deaths are reported each year in the United States, with the burden of disease now borne mostly by older adults. Fatal in a tenth of cases, 1 out of 7 survivors experience severe sequelae such as deafness and brain injury. At Texas Children's Hospital, a tertiary center in Houston, infectious disease experts regularly diagnose and treat the unpreventable and often virulent causes of meningitis in both children and adults. Awareness and vigilance for the signs of meningitis are ever critical, especially for at-risk groups, but physicians emphasize the need for more rigorous immunization strategies.
