The Old Grey Cat Welcome back to episode 18 of Mike on the Mandolin. I’m Mike. I’m super happy you’ve decided to spend a few minutes learning more about the mandolin. Please click the subscribe button if you feel I’ve earned your support. Today I’m going to do something a little bit different. So far I’ve been talking about scales and some basic music theory, but I’d like to provide the first video in a series dedicated to teaching some tunes I enjoy. I’ll do my best to select tunes that aren’t already covered in on other channels such as Baron’s really awesome channel mandolessons / mandolessons The approach I’ll take is to provide the tune in it’s entirety and then I’ll break it down into sections slowly. I’ll also provide the tab and standard notation to help you learn. This episode’s tune is the Old Grey Cat. I recently came across this tune in the Portland Collection - a really awesome resource of tunes from the Northwest - and it’s been stuck in my head! According to the notes in the collection this tune is an old Scottish tune and is printed in Kerr’s Merry Melodies, Volume 1. So this tune is in E Dorian. Essentially it’s a Eminor scale with the addition of a sharp 6 - C# The the majority of the chord progression rocking back between the Em and the D chord during the A part. And then in the B part it follows a progression Em D, Em G A B and then resolves back to Em. Let me play it for you. Let me slow that down now, we’ll work on the A part first. It’s important you play it slow. Now let’s slow down the B part. And at a mid tempo. Also, if you liked this video, please ‘like’ it below, leave a comment and subscribe. Finally, the best way to support my channel is to help share this with other mandolin players. Until next time, keep picking’
