Tried tightening it down (even though it didn’t need it) and the light never went off. Could there be another issue or is this a common computer error? No, you have an EVAP leak and the self-test is reading it. There is no such thing as a “common computer error” as the ECU can only do what it is programmed to do, and it is programmed to run system quality checks. But the gas cap is not the only thing capable of leaking, just the most common. The professional troubleshoot generally involves “smoking” the system (injecting smoke to detect any leaks) and can be a real pain at times. Rams are known to be rust-prone, and the Chrysler filler necks to the fuel tank are often perforated with corrosion breaches that won’t pass the self-test.
