Traditionally, Khau nhuc is made quite elaborately from pork belly after being carefully marinated with spices and steamed for a long time. Khau nhuc was brought to Vietnam by immigrants from China. The name "Khau nhuc" comes from the Chinese pronunciation. "Khau" means "steamed until tender", and "nhuc" means "meat", so if translated correctly, it can be understood as "Steamed meat" - or steamed until tender. The Chinese consider Khau nhuc a rustic dish but it has great spiritual meaning, the way the meat is arranged on the plate in the shape of a small hill rising up represents the will and growth in the future.
