Expanding East x North East: Conservation Strategies and More | Deepika Sorabjee

This session addresses greenfield geographies through programme design that translates beyond art conservation and region. How does one lay first steps in art infrastructure with needed urgency, yet build integrity and continuity? Using the model of establishing the conservation centre – now called KCC Conservation Lab – at Kolkata Centre for Creativity, as one of the five institutes in the Tata Trusts’ Art Conservation Initiative, the talk addresses how one approaches sector expansion through institution – something that is needed to imagine beyond programme and ensure growth, and how Covid-19 helped restructure a vital aspect of the programme and subsequently the quick expansion into Sikkim. This translates the thinking and programme design beyond a programme, understanding the constraints ever present in the arts, and frames the approach to any art institution building.
