Few movie themes are as instantly recognizable as the heroic, brass-heavy score of Back to the Future. It’s a theme that perfectly captures the thrill of adventure, the mystery of time travel, and the high-stakes race against the clock. The entire trilogy was scored by American composer Alan Silvestri. Before Back to the Future, Silvestri was known for more rhythmic and electronic scores. However, director Robert Zemeckis had a very specific request for this film: "It's got to be big.". To achieve that "big" sound, Silvestri used a 98-piece orchestra—the largest ever assembled for a Universal Pictures score at that time. Most Hollywood "hero" themes start with an upward leap in notes. Interestingly, Silvestri’s main motif begins with a downward leap, followed by a second leap that is slightly "off" (a half-step out), mirroring how Marty travels back in time and returns to a present that is slightly altered.
