2022 BMW CE 04 Electric Scooter | New Model Overview & Pricing

I thought I’d cover BMW’s announcement of their CE 04 electric scooter, which will be coming to Australia in Quarter 1 of 2022, with a fairly hefty price tag of $20,350 in Australia, $11,800 in the US and €15,000 (Euros) in Europe. Standard inclusions may vary by market there though, as to what that gets you. The CE 04 is described as the brand’s 'electric star' for the city, with all new BMW Motorrad models for urban mobility apparently to be pure electric, which could just include mopeds if you’re feeling alarmed. Naturally scooters are the most obvious machines to go electric, they are already automatic, generally don’t have an exhaust or engine note really worth writing about, with a few exceptions, and are also for much shorter trips, which suits the limitations of electric motorcycles. So what’s on offer? Well performance is 31 kWor 42 hp, which is more than the C400 which only offers 34 hp, but quite a bit lower than the C650 at 60 hp. Battery cell capacity is 8.9 kWh, and the range is quoted at 130 km, but it’s unclear what kind of riding this will be for, with many electric vehicles offering very different ranges depending on suburban or highway riding. I’d kind of hope that was on the highway, at regular speed, but it seems a little unlikely. The top speed is apparently set to 120 km/h, making highway riding possible though, with a 2.7 second 0-50 km/h time, or 9.1 seconds to reach 100 km/h, which is slightly faster than the C400. The permanent magnet electric motor is liquid cooled and mounted in the frame between the battery and rear wheel, while the lithium ion battery is air-cooled and can be charged via a regular household socket, or with a 30A quick charger which is an accessory. A full charge from flat on regular charging is 4 hours 20 mins, and with the quick charger just 1 hour 40 minutes. Charging from 20 to 80 per cent takes 45 minutes on the quick charger too, which is probably mentioned for those who will need to make stops on longer trips. Assuming that’s 60 per cent of normal range, that could be 78 kilometres for a 60 per cent charge. Also featured is automatic stability control, or essentially traction control to prevent rear slip, with three standard riding modes, Eco, Rain and Road. The frame is a tubular steel unit, with telescopic 35 mm forks, with the rear running a single-sided swingarm. A spring strut handles rear suspension duties, with 15 inch tyres run, which includes a 120/70 front and 160/60 rear. Dual disc brakes are run on the front including four-piston calipers, with a single disc unit on the rear, and BMW Motorrad ABS Pro is standard, which means a banking sensor or cornering functionality. A big 10.25 inch TFT display is fitted, and runs integrated map navigation, with a USB C charging port for a phone. Lighting is LED all around, including an adaptive turning light, with front and side storage, including a helmet compartment, which can apparently be accessed while seated. Standard features include Tyre Pressure Control, a heated seat and centre stand, with the Australian versions including the Dynamic Package and Comfort packages as standard. Those include the Headlight Pro, Adaptive Headlight, Daytime Running Light, Riding Modes Pro and ABS Pro, as well as heated grips and backrest comfort seat. Styling is very futuristic to my eye and while BMW is certainly a premium motorcycle manufacturer, the CE 04 is over double the price of their own C400, which starts at just over $9000 dollars here in Australia, with the GT version bumping that to almost $10.5k. The rapid charger for the CE 04 also sets you back $1330, if you do want that quick charging. I’d guess with the range this will most likely be a vehicle for shorter trips, or commuting so that may not be necessary for many. Seat height is 780 mm, so very similar to the C400, however at 231 kg the CE 04 is significantly heavier, even if being a scooter keeps the centre of gravity low and easily managed.
