In this episode of Hardwood Voices, we talk with legendary Madison-Ridgeland Academy head coach Richard Duease. He is the all-time winningest high school basketball coach in Mississippi history and the second winningest active coach in the country. With over 1,800 career wins, more than 40 state championships, and 30 Coach of the Year honors, Coach Duease has built one of the most sustained dynasties in high school basketball. Now in the final season of his historic career, he reflects on what still drives him, how he defines great coaches, and how he has adapted without lowering his standards. We dive into lessons from his relationship with Bob Knight, coaching elite talent like Josh Hubbard and Erick Dampier Jr, and scheduling tough national competition. Most importantly, he opens up about his faith and what he ultimately wants to be remembered for. 00:00 Intro 00:32 Thoughts on Coaching Final Season 01:12 Defining Great Coaching 02:39 Adapting Without Lowering Standards 03:53 Coaching #2 Ranked Erick Dampier Jr. 05:02 Lessons from Bob Knight 06:19 Defense 07:18 Motivations 08:08 How Would Your Players Describe You 09:03 Coaching Josh Hubbard 10:52 Scheduling Tough National Games 14:24 Giving Star Players Freedom 15:26 Adjusting As a Coach 16:29 Getting Teams to Play Together 17:28 What Separates Elite Players 18:45 God's Work 20:06 What Do You Want to Be Remembered By 20:54 Lifelong Learner
