Born on June 17, 1933, in Monticello, Mississippi, Dr. Roderick "Rod" Raynor Paige dedicated his life to expanding opportunity through education. In 2001, President George W. Bush appointed him to serve as the 7th U.S. Secretary of Education, making him the first superintendent—and the first African American—to lead the Department. He served from 2001 to 2005, guiding the president in the development, passage, and implementation of the landmark No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Before his historic appointment, Dr. Paige served as superintendent of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), where he built a national reputation for innovation and improving student outcomes. His career spanned every level of the education system—from classroom teacher to head football coach, college dean, school board member and school superintendent—reflecting his deep belief that every child deserves a fair shot. Dr. Paige earned his bachelor’s degree from Jackson State University and his master’s and doctorate from Indiana University along with holding numerous honorary doctorates. He was also an active member of several organizations and corporate bords which include his beloved Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Boule) and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957 and later returned to Jackson State University as interim president from 2016 to 2017. Secretary Paige is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie; his children, Danielle and Rod Jr.; his sisters Elaine Witty and Raygiene Paige; neices and nephews and countless colleagues and friends who cherished his integrity, leadership, and lifelong commitment to public service.
