The Char B1 was a French heavy tank that was manufactured before World War II. Here's a brief history of the Char B1: -Development and Production- The Char B1 had its origins in the concept of a Char de Bataille conceived by General Jean Baptiste Eugène Estienne in 1919. The first prototype, mild steel n°101, was completed by Renault in 1929. The Char B1 was a specialized break-through vehicle, originally conceived as a self-propelled gun with a 75 mm howitzer in the hull. Later, a 47 mm gun in a turret was added, allowing it to function also as a Char de Bataille, a "battle tank" fighting enemy armor. Its development and production were repeatedly delayed, resulting in a vehicle that was both technologically complex and expensive. -Specifications- The Char B1 was a heavy tank with a mass of 28 tonnes. It was equipped with a 75 mm ABS SA 35 howitzer as the main armament and a 47 mm SA 34 (Char B1) or 47 mm SA 35 (Char B1 bis) as the secondary armament. The tank had an operational range of 200 km and a maximum speed of 28 km/h. -Operational History- The Char B1 was in service from 1936–1940 in France and from 1944–1945 with the Free French Forces. It was used by France and Germany during World War II. After the defeat of France, captured Char B1 tanks were used by Germany, with some rebuilt as flamethrowers, Munitionspanzer, or mechanized artillery. -Variants- There were several variants of the Char B1, including the Char B1 bis and Char B1 ter. The Char B1 bis is arguably the most famous and popular French tank of the 1940 campaign. It featured thick armor and a combination of anti-tank and anti-infantry firepower with the turreted 47 mm and hull-mounted 75 mm guns. In total, 405 units were built, including 34 Char B1, 369 Char B1 bis, and two Char B1 ter.
