"What an unusual power you have, you are no ordinary person", painter Henry Tonks said about his muse and friend Mary Hutchinson (1889-1977). Hutchinson, born Mary Barnes in India, lost her mother very young and adapted well to a bohemian Italian existence with her maternal grandparents. A half-cousin of Lytton Strachey, she fell in among his friends and acquaintances in the Bloomsbury Set. Quickly pounced upon for extramarital affairs by Vita Sackville-West, Maria Huxley and Clive Bell, Hutchinson inspired art and snippy comments alike. She may have been one of the major propelling forces to writer and playwright T.S. Eliot. Sources: "The remarkable relationship of T. S. Eliot and Mary Hutchinson.."
