Read full story here: An expected vote on a moratorium from County Commissioners was delayed Monday evening, causing frustration among residents. The county’s attorney addressed the delay at the start of the meeting, making it clear that commissioners can’t vote just yet due to the required legal process that has to happen first. As WSBT 22 previously reported, the proposed one-year moratorium includes a favorable recommendation from the planning commission. Every turnout we've had for this, it's overwhelming majority or against data centers,” said Fulton County Resident James Zimmerman. More than 100 people packed the Fulton County 4H Fairgrounds Community Building, expecting a vote on a proposed one-year moratorium on data centers. Some said the moratorium isn’t about stopping progress but slowing down to get it right. I'm hopeful that when they hear a moratorium, they know that means their job's not done. A moratorium is to study up on the issue and to make sure you really know what's going on,” said Fulton County Resident Ethan Trottier. Instead, the vote was pushed to next week, delayed by what the county’s attorney described as procedural oversight. Under Indiana law, the proposal must first be properly certified and publicly advertised, including specific language stating commissioners are considering the planning commission’s recommendation. That step had not been completed before Monday’s meeting. Still, commissioners came prepared and shared how they planned to vote. Commissioners Bryan Lewis and Rick Ranstead support the one-year permit pause, while Commissioner Dave Sommers hopes for an amendment. A year is too long. It should be able to be done in 2-3 months. It's my opinion that this needs to be voted down, that we need to shorten it. I didn't say not have a moratorium, I'd like to see a much shorter time frame to get this done and get this decided,” said Fulton County Commissioner (R) Dave Sommers. Despite frustration, many still held out hope that commissioners would approve the moratorium next week. I would say the large portion of the people here tonight are for a moratorium. And I hope that the commissioners will speak on their behalf and do the right thing,” said Zimmerman. Fulton County Commissioners will meet again at the same location and time next Monday to cast an official vote as they work to form a committee to consider changes to the proposed ordinance. _________________ Stay up to date by following our social media: WSBT 22 on Facebook: / wsbtnews WSBT 22 on X: / wsbt WSBT 22 on Instagram: / wsbt For more information, visit https://wsbt.com/ Have a news tip?
