Shanmukhapriya Academy of Music presents the Beginner Level Swara Exercises in teaching and learning mode for the students of Carnatic Music. The fundamental raga taught is Mayamalavagowla and Talam is Adi Talam, which is an 8 beat cycle. 00:00 - Introduction 03:33 - Learn to Sing SA-PA-SA 04:25 - Sarali Varisai - 3 Speeds 15:43 - Sarali Varisai - Zig Zag Patterns from Exercise 10 to 14 Know the Raga and its Grammar. A brief note on Raga Mayamalavagowla https://anuradhamahesh.wordpress.com/... How to Practice ? Any exercise that is practiced must be memorised or internalised thoroughly and memorising happens only through constant repetition. An ideal way to memorise is to repeat the swara exercises 7 times a day, thrice in the morning and four times in the evening. This will make a practice of 49 times a week, by which time the swara exercise must have registered in to the brain. Deliberate and Consistent Practice is the key behind Success On the second day of the week, at least the first 7 swaras must be memorised, as they are just sequential patterns and can be easily done. The third and fourth day of the week, we take the exercises 8,9 and 10 along with 1-7. Thus we complete the first 10 swara exercises. The fifth and sixth day, exercises 11-14 must be mastered along with 1-10 swara exercises. The seventh day, is a recap of of all the 14 swara exercises nonstop 7 times. The 8th day, you are very thorough with what is taught by the teacher and can show her in confidence the entire lesson. Sruthi and Talam Sruthir Matha Laya Pitha. Sruthi is the mother of Music and Layam or Talam is considered as Pitha. Sruthi brings harmony in singing and Layam brings the discipline in the song. Any practice must have the accompaniment of Sruthi as fixed by the teacher, according to the voice range of the student. The voice must blend with the Sruthi and there should be no compromise on this. The ideal way to practice with perfect sruthi is to sit in a room with closed door and windows, keeping the sruthi in good volume and singing in tune with the sruthi in open throat. Carnatic music does not allow light or head voice singing as done in filmy music. The voice MUST BE BOLD and akaara saadhakam is mandatory to get the voice flowing like a water fall without any jerkiness. The above lesson Sarali Varisai posted here teaches you how to sing in 3 speeds. This must be practiced in Swaras and then in akaara that will be taught by the teacher. If you have not reached the level of second and third speed, you can start listening to it every day so that you are internalising the melody part along with laya, without your knowledge. When the teacher teaches, you can easily pick up the melody without any difficulty. Learning happens through constantly listening. Actually, it is 80% listening and 20% practicing both mentally and orally. Related Posts and links Notations for Sarali Varisai & Madhyasthayi Varisai https://anuradhamahesh.wordpress.com/...
