Today on the Vision Miner podcast, we’re diving into the evolving landscape of the 3D printing industry — from market consolidations and bankruptcies to the growing pains that honestly remind us a lot of the early PC and semiconductor eras. We kick things off with a thought-provoking article from 3DPrintingIndustry.com called “Drain the Moat or Grow Legs” — it sets the stage for a real conversation about where additive manufacturing is heading. You’ve probably seen those massive 3D printed boat hulls from companies like Thermwood or Cincinnati. Ever wonder how practical that stuff really is? We get into it — talking about how these giant gantry systems are customized, and whether more boats could (or should) be 3D printed. We throw around some innovative ideas, like using gyroid infill for unsinkable designs, or printing boat shapes as cores for fiberglass or carbon fiber wrapping. A big highlight here is printing the molds themselves — an area where materials like PEEK, ULTEM, and high-temp carbon fiber nylon (like the kind used in firearm holsters) absolutely crush traditional options like ABS or PETG when it comes to tooling life. Then we shift gears into concrete 3D printing — and ask the obvious question: why isn’t this everywhere yet? You’d think it’d be huge for eco-friendly housing or fast construction, like that 3D printed Starbucks in Texas (shoutout to ICON — check them out at iconbuild.com). We break down the challenges, from concrete mixtures to logistics to ideas like self-climbing printers and foam-core walls for insulation. There are some wild real-world applications, too — like Titan 3D Robotics printing autonomous Navy target boats, or sacrificial molds from Aquasys being used for carbon fiber parts. Throughout the episode, we share some awesome stories from our own journey at Vision Miner — like customers in Colombia 3D printing PEEK skull implants back in 2017, or using PVDF for radar equipment. We also shout out companies doing incredible work, like CPS Drone, who are developing underwater autonomous camera drones. All of this brings us to a reflection on our role in the industry — we’re not in the hobbyist space. We’re working with engineers and manufacturers doing critical, real-world applications in extreme environments — the kind of stuff most people never see. It’s part of the challenge: how do we make “boring brackets” and high-end material science interesting to a wider audience while staying true to our core? So, we want to hear from you — what are your experiences with industrial 3D printing, boat building, concrete construction, or advanced materials? And by the way, we’re bringing guests onto the show soon, so if you (or someone you know) has deep experience in this space, let us know — we’d love to have you on. At Vision Miner, we specialize in Functional 3D Printing — especially with high-performance materials like PEEK, ULTEM, PPSU, PPS, CFPA, and more. We also carry a full lineup of industrial 3D scanners and scanning software, so whether you’re reverse engineering or doing metrology inspections, we’ve got you covered. If you’re working on a project and want to explore the possibilities of high-performance 3D printing — hit us up. We’d love to help you find the right solution.
