They Fly Now?, toy photography. Hello and welcome back to another behind the scenes toy photography video! This week I'm going to show you how to make your action figures take to the skies. I call this shot: They Fly Now? Experimenting with camera angles is always fun, so this week, I thought I would try to take a shot with some verticality to it. I picked a background photo with some big puffy clouds and a bright shining sun, then set up some foam core board as a reflector. Next, I set up my foreground and background. I wanted to really showcase the jumping heights of my rocket troopers, so I included a bunch of ground troops for comparison. I posed two close to my lens and another two way in the back to give the photo some depth. I also spaced out some chunks of concrete to cover up the bottom of my TV. Following that, I set up my figure stands. I used some acrylic cylinders underneath the stands to add as much height as possible. With the stands in place, I carefully balanced my rocket troopers on top, then set up some spotlights behind them to create some glow for the flames of their jetpacks. Time to shoot! Here's my starting shot. My main goal for this edit, of course, was to remove the figure stands and add some special effects. I began by creating a layer mask and using a soft edged brush to edit out bottoms of my stands. To mask around the troopers legs, I had to get a little more hands on with the pen tool. Next, I cropped the image and made some miscellaneous touchups, filling out the articulation joints on my toys and making some adjustments to the lighting and colour balance. Lastly, I used some premade flame effects to create the thrusters on my jump trooper's jetpacks. This took some trial and error on my part, and while I think there's room for improvement, I did the best I could for the moment. So, once again, here's my starting image. And here's where I ended up! Thanks so much for watching.
