Kurdish fighters leave warehouse, said to be heading for Kobani

(31 Oct 2014) A convoy carrying Iraqi peshmerga troops and heavy weapons left a warehouse in southeast Turkey on Friday and headed south in the direction of the Syrian border. The Kurdish fighters were chanting "Kobani, Kobani", while honking the horns of their vehicles and waving their rifles in the air. It was not immediately clear when the force was supposed to cross into Kobani and Turkish police moved journalists away from the road on which the convoy was headed. A senior Kurdish official inside Kobani, which is also known by its Arabic name Ayn al-Arab, said the fighters are bringing with them heavy machine guns and most importantly anti-tank missiles. Anwar Muslim said Kurdish fighters in Kobani don't currently have the weapons to stop the tanks that the Islamic State militants are using. Islamic State militants launched their offensive in mid-September and ensuing battles have killed more than 800 people, according to activists. Activists say there are about 1,000 Syrian Kurdish fighters and more than 3,000 jihadis in the vicinity of the beleaguered town.
