The Day After - BTEC Media Studies Short Film

The Day After - BtEC Media Short Film Our task was to create a short film about ANYTHING that provides emphasis on Camera Angles and Shots. It was very much an experimental film where we just went around trying out shots that would be difficult but inevitably look good. I chose Christian as a partner and cast him in the leading role. Our concept was a guy gets smashed at a party and comes into school the next day with the worst hangover imaginable. We really wanted, above all else, to create the sense of nausea through our camera angles and techniques. We actually went out to do some test footage a week before shooting began to get our bearings in our location (our school). When we began shooting it was initially difficult with unexpected people turning up in shot and getting over the hurdles of Christians acting nerves. We decided to film chronologically at first which worked well and we managed to get half of the movie filmed within day 1. Day 2 we set out what scenes we were going to film. We decided to film both the tricky wall shot and our characters difficult slip. Christian got his haircut between day 1 and 2 so look out for that continuity error lol. We asked Mr Rees if we could use the lighting rig for Christians illusions. It ended up working quite well with the addition of my voice over (“CHRISTIAN”) in the background. The toilet scenes were hard because we got very judging looks from teachers walking past to see us lying on the dirty floor. However we completed this, did some reshoots downstairs and also managed to find a god damn clock for one shot finally! Post-Production was fairly challenging with me ending up editing this final cut on my phone (I find the software and layout easier to manage). I included a filter on POV shots to create that blurry perspective. I also added a slight cinematic tinge to make the school environment seem just that little bit more ‘Mental Asylum-y’. As far as music is concerned, I think I hit the jackpot. I initially planned for all of the music to originate from the ‘Stranger Things’ score (half of it did). But I did use 2 tracks from Ludwig Goransson’s ‘Tenet’ score which I think worked perfectly. Overall while it was challenging working with a production crew of 2. I think the film comes off well. I hope you guys enjoyed it.
