This procedure may be recommended if you have chronic low-back pain caused by damaged spinal discs. By interrupting nerve signals, this procedure reduces pain. During the procedure, your doctor guides two small needles into the damaged disc using a type of X-ray called fluoroscopy. Radio waves send an electrical current to the needles, heating them. As a result of the heat, the abnormal nerves in the disc are damaged, which prevents pain messages from reaching the brain. The heat from the needles may also strengthen the disc tissue. It takes about 30 minutes to complete this outpatient procedure. During the procedure, you will be sedated and given local anesthetics.
