A team led by Dr. Song-Cheol Kim from AMC has performed the laparoscopy-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy procedure over one hundred times and set a world record in this field. In the period between May 2007 and February 2012, AMC surpassed the remarkable record of one hundred such procedures. This number is significantly higher than the second-highest institutional record, held by the Mayo Clinic with sixty cases. Along with attaining this high record, an amazing success rate of 99% was also achieved at AMC. Dr. Song-Cheol Kim / Division of Hepato-Biliary & Pancreas Surgery This procedure has a relatively short history, and was performed only experimentally until the last several years. Even well-established institutions overseas have performed no more than fifty or sixty. AMC's accomplishment of 100 cases in a very short period of time is the highest number anywhere in the world so far. When operating on the pancreas, laparoscopic surgery is highly difficult because the organ is located deep within the abdomen, a major incision is required and issues like pain and postoperative complications are not easy to manage. However, with laparoscopy-assisted surgery, patients benefit from both reduced pain and shorter hospital stays. Additional benefits of minimally-invasive surgery are less bleeding, lower incidence of complications, and quick recovery. All of these lead to patient satisfaction. Yong-Seok Koo (age 65) / Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province (After the procedure), my recovery was quick and I felt good. (Before the surgery), I was ready to give up, but now it feels great to think about going back to work. Dr. Song-Cheol Kim / Division of Hepato-Biliary & Pancreas Surgery. Dr. Song-Cheol Kim / Division of Hepato-Biliary & Pancreas Surgery Pancreatic head resection in itself is not a procedure that can be performed by just any pancreatic surgeon, and laparoscopy-assisted surgery is even more technically challenging. Our next goal is to generalize (this procedure) so that it becomes more universally feasible for all pancreatic surgeons. Also, because it is still generally difficult to apply in very advanced cases of pancreatic cancer, we plan to work on that challenge. Achieving this milestone of one hundred cases of this complex procedure confirms AMC's position as a worldwide leader in the field of laparoscopy-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy procedures.
