A bill currently in the NYS Senate committee would mandate every kid in grades K-5 (and 6th in some cases) gets a 30-minute recess on school days exceeding five hours. There are many intricacies to Senate Bill S6858, including the fact that recess can not be taken away as punishment. The bill goes on to say young students learn through play with their peers; getting socialization and exercise through recess. The 30-minute rule serves as a suggestion, and schools are welcome to surpass it. Schools would also have to provide “tools” (balls, jump ropes, etc.) to have a have a productive recess. Weather permitting, the 30 minutes would have to be spent outside, but activity can be scheduled indoors with proper space
