The Battle of Neville's Cross, fought on October 17, 1346, was a significant conflict during the Second War of Scottish Independence. King David II of Scotland led his forces into England, hoping to divert English attention from their campaigns in France. However, the Scottish army was decisively defeated by the English near Durham. During the battle, King David was struck by two arrows to the face, a grievous injury that forced him to flee. In a desperate bid to escape capture, he hid under a bridge, but his enemies soon discovered his hiding place. Despite his severe injuries, King David displayed remarkable resilience, fighting back fiercely and even managing to knock out two of his captor's teeth before being overpowered. Remarkably, King David survived this ordeal and was taken prisoner by the English. He spent the next eleven years in captivity, primarily in the Tower of London, before being released in 1357 as part of the Treaty of Berwick. Upon his release, he returned to Scotland and resumed his reign, ruling for another 14 years until his death in 1371. King David's survival and continued rule after such a harrowing experience became a testament to his resilience and determination, leaving a lasting legacy in Scottish history.
