Our new visuals capture the struggle of our people against the odds. At the end of the 19th century, three world superpowers, the US, Britain, and Germany, were vying for control of Samoa. The United States and Britain had just formed an alliance against the Samoans said to be on the side of the Germans. In March 1899, in a brutal display of power and aggression, the US warship Philadelphia opened fire and bombarded villages on the coast of Upolu. The shelling was indiscriminate and many Samoans, men, woman, and children were killed. For several weeks, US and British warships bombarded and terrorised many villages in an attempt to force their governance. Despite being thoroughly outmatched, our people stood tall, stood strong, and fought back. Together, we remember those who fought for our homeland.
