How to Gauge a 19th Century Skirt || A Historical Sewing How To

This historical how to video focuses on more of the logistics, research, and ways to gauge a 19th century dress than it does on the actual gauging. There are already Youtube tutorials on gauging (sometimes called cartridge pleating but that's a modern term, not a historical one) and lots of blog posts showing you how to do this in a historical context and I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Instead, we talk about gauging: what is it, why it was used, when it was used, how often it was used in cotton vs. silk vs. wool dresses in a particular time period (with charts and graphs! I like visuals!). We also look at original dresses that were gauged as the original Victorians are always the best to learn from :). Then there is a brief how to on gauging with the logistics of it including how to sew it to a waistband or to a piped bodice edge. Then I show you several of my reproduction dresses where we discuss all the ways gauging can be used and the variety of ways you can attach a skirt to a bodice in the mid-19th century.
