Autonomy is often misunderstood as a lack of structure or control. From a dog’s view, autonomy is much simpler. It is about having choice, predictability, and a sense of safety within clear boundaries. When dogs lack autonomy, we often see the behaviors humans struggle with most: reactivity, shutdown, anxiety, frustration, and conflict. These behaviors are not failures—they are communication.
