Old Ghost Road MTB Mountain Biking

This Knitting Circle reunites once again in New Zealand for an unforgettable three day bike packing adventure. What we lack in mountain bike skills we more than make up for in stopping to knit the odd tale or two along the Old Ghost Road, New Zealand's longest continuous single track from Lyell to Seddonville high above the clouds. Day one begins with a gentle climb through lush rain forest past the Big Slips to Lyell Saddle hut for lunch. Tame Robins and Fantails are curious to meet us as we continue to climb up to Mt Montgomery at 1,332m before descending to an epic sunset at Ghost Lake Hut for the night. Day 2 begins at 6am with a picture perfect sunrise riding on knife-edge single track before dropping like stones on the skyline steps to the Stern Valley floor with our bikes on our shoulders. Once we reach the bottom we begin our second climb through the Boneyard and take a break at Irishmans Leek before swooshing through the huge rock boulders and scree to camp 2 at Specimen Point Hut alongside the Mokihinui River. Day 3 would have been a gentle 15kms to the finish along the river to Seddonville but we got caught on the edge of Cyclone Fehi which really mixed things up. Trees were strewn across the trail and rain bashed against the small purpose built bridges. Still, we couldn't wipe the smiles from our faces! This track is one of two New Zealand tracks to make it onto IMBA's Epic Rides List and sets a standard for back country bike packing which will be very hard to beat. We thank the builders of the Old Ghost Road for their incredible vision and hard work in making this trail happen - you gave four old mates the time of their lives!
