As the Tobacco Prevention & Education Program Coordinator for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Scott Kalama has seen how Big Tobacco uses Native American imagery to make his people think commercial tobacco is traditional. After researching the benefits of smoke-free environments, Scott, along with Mackie Begay and his elders, decided to make the Simnasho Powwow a tobacco-free event while educating their community about the difference between commercial and traditional tobacco. His next step is to create smoke-free parks in Oregon, so children and families can enjoy a safe and healthy environment together. The Simnasho community is working to make future generations healthy. How does your community support your health? Smokefree Oregon is all of us - individuals, communities, organizations, and health workers - who want a healthier environment for all Oregonians. If you’ve never smoked or if you’re struggling to quit, we all have something to gain. Smokefree Oregon is about setting our state free from the burden of tobacco. It’s about saving dollars and saving lives. See how Oregonians are standing up to Big Tobacco: http://smokefreeoregon.com/oregonians/
