This trip takes place in East central Saskatchewan, Northwest of the border towns Creighton, SK and Flin Flon, MB. The starting/end point of this trip is just off of highway 135 at the outfitter Slim’s Cabins. It is a 2 week, 250km solo canoe trip with 34 portages and great fishing. On day three of the trip I tackled a 1.2km portage from Mukoman Lake to Belcher Lake. The portage was in fair to good condition, but there was a lot of heat and bugs, so I was happy to get it out of the way. From there I do a little of bit of exploring and fishing as I paddle to the south end of Belcher. The next portage is a short one but it holds a lot of significance for this trip. When I last came to this area (around 2013), I bumped into this portage on my way South to Attitti Lake. Being naïve, I was surprised there was a portage, but it sparked my curiosity to come back and explore what was one the other side. I’m grateful that today was the day I finally got to do that. I was also grateful that there was some semblance of a trail for the next three portages. I cleared trail for the first two portages and I raced across the last one to McArthur Lake as the sun was getting low in the sky. On McArthur, I caught a Lake Trout for supper, and eventually found a camping spot, though it wasn’t the best. On day four of the trip, I managed to get away late again as I usually take my time to savor the morning, coffee and fire. Regardless, it didn’t take long before I paddled to my first portage. There was no indication of any kind of trail other than an old melted aluminum boat. At least the portage was short. From there I follow a shallow creek where I had to line my canoe twice. From there I venture further downstream until I bumped into my second and last portage of the day. From what I could see there was no established portage (I probably checked the wrong side), so I had to cut my way through. The amount I had to cut could have been worse; the tough part was the undulating topography. Once past this barrier, I floated down stream until I reached Nemei (Cree word for “Trout”) Lake. I paddled to a camp at a site that I came across when I traveled up the Nemei River in 2021. I did film that trip, but my external hard drive hit the floor and I lost all my footage. Just Would like to give a big thanks to the Pelican Narrows and Sandy Bay band offices for helping me with the translations of the lake names. If anyone notices any mistakes, please let me know!
