(14 Aug 1995) T/I 10:29:08 STORY: FUNERAL LOCATION: MOSCOW DATE: 8 AUGUST 1995 DURATION: 1.16 VIPs flock to burial of poisoned banker Top Russian politicians and businessmen paid their last respects on Tuesday (8/8) to influential banker Ivan Kivelidi, poisoned along with his secretary. Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and other dignitaries joined a dozen members of the Kivelidi family for the ceremony, held amid growing anger at police impotence against organised crime. Dozens of floral wreaths were sent and businessmen at the ceremony said the family had received more than 200 telegrams of condolence from political and business leaders across Russia, including one from President Boris Yeltsin. But neither Chernomyrdin's presence nor the lengthy tribute from Yeltsin read out to the gathering could mollify bankers and businessmen shocked by the assassination of the "pioneer of Russian business." Kivelidi, the most prominent businessman to be killed in Russia this year, died on Friday along with his secretary, Zara Ismailova. It was reported that their tea was laced with poison that was also smeared on a telephone. Kivelidi, 46, was the head of the Rosbiznesbank and the Russian Roundtable, the country's most influential business organization. He had been a frequent critic of the Interior Ministry's failure to protect businessmen and investigate their murders. SHOWS: (MOSCOW, RUSSIA, 8/8) Coffin with mourners. Family among crowd.
