The Wilsons at The Bridge Folk Club, 5 December 2022 Big Steamers (Words; Rudyard Kipling, Tune; Peter Bellamy, Arr The Wilson Family) This is sometimes believed to be about the First World War but it was published three years before the war started. It stressed the prevailing view at that time that Britain had to maintain a strong navy to protect its supplies. The first two lines of each four-line stanza are in the form of a question put by a child to the big steamers, and the third and fourth lines comprise the steamers’ reply ________________________ Big Steamers is on the ‘Wilson Family Album’ CD. They have been singing this since Peter Bellamy ‘suggested’ (ie instructed) they should learn it. It was one of the songs they performed as a separate group during Sting’s shows in The Public Theatre in New York City when he was launching his ‘The Last Ship’ album ________________________ The Wilson Family’s new album ‘Sibling Revivalry’ is due out in April 2023.
