Cynodonts were an intriguing group of mammal-like reptiles which existed between the late Permian and early Jurassic periods. They belong to the therapsid group and even though mammals evolved from them, cynodonts were not mammals themselves. The key morphological adaptations which gave rise to mammals evolved over millions of years is seen in this early group of animals. Over time, there are significant changes to the skull and jawbone structure, hair and fur began to develop on their bodies and their arms and shoulders changed position allowing for easier movement. Without these significant evolutionary changes many mammals may not have survived in the terrestrial world. After the K/Pg extinction event many new ecological niches became available for the small, ground dwelling animals, and a rapid diversification of mammals subsequently took place. Team: Hugh Boyle, Amy Dunican, Steve Lane, Zak O'Connor and Shannon O'Malley Thanks to John Murray and Tracey Frank for their support and feedback during the production of this short film.
